He was struck by her the first time he met her, that Spring of 2014. Here was a girl that was beautiful and smart, driven, and had a winning personality. The other thing she had? A boyfriend.
Boyfriend aside, Gary and Laura became friends later that year, studying together in their Masters program. It was during a conversation with her roommate that Laura realized that her current boyfriend was causing her to change herself for him, and that when she was around Gary, she was more herself than ever. Laura broke up with her ex and stayed friends with Gary.
They fell in love as best friends, over statistics and tacos and group projects. When Laura said yes to dating Gary several months later, it was the easiest yes she’d ever said.
Little did she know (or maybe she did) that she’d be saying yes to forever. On November 24th of 2017 Gary completely surprised Laura and gave her a long, narrow box. In it was Ginny Weasley’s wand from Harry Potter and a beautiful ring. He took the ring from her, and while she stood there not being able to make intelligible sounds, asked her to marry him. And of course, she said yes. Actually, she still couldn’t speak, so she just threw her arms around him and nodded.
Over the past six years since they’ve met, Laura and Gary have faced many obstacles. They’ve been states apart for years, traveled thousands of miles, faced a global pandemic, changed their venue, changed their plans, and braved a hurricane the day of. They’re finally married despite all the odds and I’m so happy for them.
